Former director of the School of Landscape Architecture at the University of Montréal (1991-1996), Philippe Poullaouec-Gonidec is an associate professor at the School of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture at the University of Montréal. He was co-founder and director of the Chair in Landscape and Environment at this institution from 1996 to 2017. He has held the UNESCO Chair in Urban Landscape since its creation in 2003. As a member of the Academy of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences of the Royal Society of Canada since 2017, his research focuses mainly on the recognition of the social and cultural values and aspirations of territories and on the development of strategic design in urban landscape. Intimately associated with the mission of the UNESCO Chair in Urban Landscape, it focuses more specifically on issues related to creative processes and the inclusive design of urban planning knowledge. He is the author of several scientific publications and acts as an international expert for numerous institutions. In 2005, he received the Trudeau Research Award for his innovative thinking in landscape architecture, the scope of his scientific achievements and for his commitment to society. In 2016, he was the recipient of the Teaching Excellence Award for the internationalization of the Université de Montréal's programs and of the gold medal following the competition for the Inter-American Prize for Educational Innovation in Higher Education acknowledged by the Inter-american Organization for Higher Education (OUI-IOHE). He is also a Chevalier in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de la France, underscoring his contribution to the cultural recognition of landscape and contemporary garden design. In the late 1990s, he directed an interdisciplinary summer school on the renewal of landscape and garden design in Métis, Quebec, and was co-founder of the Métis International Contemporary Garden Festival in 2000.
