The creation of the UNESCO Chair in Urban Landscape in 2003 was the result of an agreement between the University of Montreal and UNESCO. This agreement followed the international recognition of the scientific work of the Chair in Landscape and Environment of the Université de Montréal (CPEUM), which was headed by Professor Philippe Poullaouec-Gonidec.
Since 2019, the UNESCO Chair has been attached to UNESCO’s Social and Human Sciences (SHS) programme while being closely linked to the Natural Sciences programme (ref.: MAB). It is also affiliated with the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. For its operations and the development of its scientific mission, it benefits from the support of the Sid Lee Architecture Fund, the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ) and the Université de Montréal via the International Affairs Division, the Office of Research-Development-Valorization, the Center of Digital Expertise for Research (CEN-R) and the Faculty of Environmental Design.
